Simms News, St Mary’s student newspaper, was launched in 2010 by current undergraduates Ranako Daley and David Whitehead. You can pick up a copy from various points on campus (including main reception and the Students’ Union) or check out the online editions in the archive below.

According to Ranako, “Simms News is an energetic and innovative initiative; the aim of the paper is not only to be wholly student run and student led, its ambitions are to deliver a regular sustainable service not reliant upon individuals but on a secure and reliable infrastructure.”

The long term plans for Simms News are to eventually incorporate the scheme into students’ module options and potentially spread readership to the wider local community, therefore improving local communication.

You can post suggestions for stories you’d like Simms News to cover on the Facebook Group page above, or consider contributing writing or photos to the paper if you’re interested in a career in journalism. Keep an eye out for the next edition of Simms News, available from main reception, the Students’ Union and other pick up points on campus.

Ranako Daley - General Editor
Seeing as you’ll all be starting University College very soon I’ll give you some invaluable advice — GET INVOLVED! There are so many different options for you to keep yourself occupied and SimmsNews is a great place to start. Created by Ranako Daley and Dave Whitehead, SimmsNews is St Mary’s very own student newspaper and catered completely to you guys.

From covering the progress of St Mary’s international athletes to what production is next on in the theatre, SimmsNews covers the breadth of student life at St Mary’s. But this is only possible due to the contributions of our students. We’ve got media and sport, drama and poetry and even crosswords for anyone with time on their hands between lectures. Make no mistake, SimmsNews is the real deal! Supported specifically by the Students’ Union to improve student communication and, in turn, your experience of University College life.

At SimmsNews our aim is to advertise and promote everything great about Simmies whilst also giving students the opportunity to have their voice heard; whether you want to practise your journalistic skills or propose a case for why Old House is better than New Halls, the freedom is yours. We want to get as many students involved as possible, encourage the uni to listen to student voices and give all those
involved great literary and organisational skills that will help to set you up for a life in work after University College.

SimmsNews is dynamic and focused. We have a progressive infrastructure that allows newcomers to begin their journey up the ladder from a columnist to junior editor or, if you’re keen for a more laid
back role, why not submit your art or photography to be published. And if you’re shy,we don’t have to use names! At SimmsNews it’s all about you ... the more you want to be involved the more you’ll be embraced and if your contribution is a one-off then it’s always appreciated.

Look out at the Clubs and Societies Night on 29 September for our stand and representatives and don’t be afraid to come over and say hey! Alternatively, drop me an email at ranakodaley@hotmail.co.uk and we can discuss getting you involved in the upcoming editions and a place in the society.

You’ve heard it all from me so now the rest is up to you. I look forward to working with as many of you as possible and those that I don’t, I at least want to see you with a copy in your hand!
