Freshers' Top Tips '07

OK, you're probably sick of advice from everyone regarding your upcoming move to Uni, but here are some Top 10 Tips for surviving Freshers' Week with your sanity in tact

1. Come with plenty of cash : Get doing odd jobs, on your knees at your Grandparents' house, bribe friends. Do whatever you can to bring as much as you can just for Freshers' Week. You will spend lots if you're planning to throw yourself into it, so bring money specifically for the week and ration it out!

2. Buy a Freshers Pass : Gives you a discount on the weeks entertainments and priority entry on certain nights and helps make the cash last the week.

3. Bring a School Tie : Weird I know, as you've just taken it off with whoops and yelps, but School Discos here are big business!

4. Come prepared to say : "Hi, my name is... I'm from... I'm studying...", as it is the way you will start nearly every single conversation you have in the Week! Freshers' Week has a really great atmosphere; everyone is up for talking to anyone. Even second and third years join in!

5. Make sure you get some sleep! Freshers' Week is an exciting, intense and exhausting week, even if you don't drink. There are loads of events put on throughout the week, so that you have plenty of choice in what you do and you are able to pace yourself. Don't be the one off home for two weeks with Fresher Flu in week 5 because you didn't want to miss out.

6. If you do do drink, don't do drunk : Spinning on your head on the kitchen table with your ankles over your shoulders might be funny at 2am, but in the morning you have to face the people that saw your pants when you fell off. There will be plenty of opportunities to embarrass yourself throughout the whole year.

7. Have respect : For yourself, for your neighbour, for the local community. St Mary's is an open and tolerant place; we won't accept abusive and/or antisocial behaviour so leave it at home please!

8. Go to the Freshers' Fair : Freshers Fair is jammed packed with freebies, and a party atmosphere not to be missed.

9. When you first arrive : Remember that your room will look a million times better when your bed is made and your favourite poster is up on the wall.

10. Join a Club or Society : Joining in is the best way to make the most of life at uni. There are clubs and societies to suit most, but if there's not, pop up to the SU and they'll tell you how to start one.
