Fans will finally be rewarded for their patience next week when St Mary’s tennis team’s step foot onto a competitive court. It’s been a long, hard slog, a journey Forrest Gump would be proud of making. But finally the British Universities & Colleges league (BUCS) will get a taste of the blaze of passion and sheer shot making that St Mary’s will ignite upon a league that has long needed drop shots delicately placed from a furious cross court sprint 10 feet behind the baseline. That little yellow ball will cease to become a tennis ball, but will explode into a slice of heaven before stunned mortal eyes as they witness things happen to a tennis ball that they haven’t seen since that Kaiser Chief’s video a few years back.

The absent of St Mary’s from the upper beacons of English tennis has become one of the longest ongoing feuds of world politics causing riots in Luxembourg, Venezuela and Fiji. But alas, at last, those sheer immortal cries of passion will be heard this Wednesday when that first thumping serve crashes into the University of East London’s service box.

The anticipation is so tense, the build up legendary, the question of “Will they live up to the hype?” has almost been asked as many times as “Who shot Phil Mitchell?”.
